Learn more about this up and coming talent in the interview that follows.
InterPop: Moxie hasn’t made many appearances yet in the Emergents Universe. What kind of approach are you taking to this character to put your own stamp on her?
Colleen: When I was first told about Moxie, I was intrigued because besides being a superhero she was a kidnap survivor, former beauty queen and a strongarm, no less. It immediately brought to mind the women in my life as a kid. They were the types that broke molds; rather than the proverbial “damsels in distress,” they “caused” distress. So I wanted to bring an element of this to Moxie. No matter the situation, she would always approach it with a level of confidence and problem solving intelligence that belies her looks. She still has a sense of humor and takes a fun approach to life, but it is a definite mistake to underestimate her.
InterPop: Yenny Laud has been doing a lot of coloring for us but is also a fantastic artist in her own right. How has the process been working with her?
Colleen: Yenny has been excellent and supportive; her art is great! When I saw her rendering of Moxie’s cover, I just knew we were going to have fun with this character’s story.
InterPop: Are there any other Emergents that are on your wish list to write in the future?
Colleen: Yes of course, I am always interested in characters that are more than their superficial appearances. I find contemplating discovery about what makes them tick is an enormous boost and the Emergents Universe has a veritable plethora of such types. I think Dr. Tessera, Scarlet Tiger and Torrent to name a few, are such for the mystery they hold. After all, the Emergents are in the traces of expansive evolution, and that is something that often demolishes barriers and defies expectations.
InterPop: Moxie just won a vote over in The Abyss to meet this mysterious character in his own title. Why should fans vote for Moxie again for the character they’d like to see return to Emergents Presents?
Colleen: Moxie is a complex character, with as much depth as the Abyss is mysterious. She is a kidnap survivor, who embraces her Emergent powers, but she is a thinker and is observational too, you might say that is part of the “armor” she gained from her traumatic experience. There isn’t a challenge she’s not strong enough to face physically, but often, the most difficult battles have to first be won in the mind and I think Moxie has proven that she has that capability, when it comes to standing toe to toe with any other Emergent.
InterPop: How has your experience been working with InterPop?
Colleen: As a newbie to the family at InterPop, my fellow creatives have been very supportive and helpful. I feel very welcomed and glad to be here!
