A veteran colorist in the comics industry, having worked on such illustrious projects as Civil War and Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel, Wil has been providing his stellar colors to InterPop’s Emergents Universe since the beginning, most recently on a Scott McDaniel variant edition for #ZoeMG #6. Often paired with Adrián Gutiérrez on lineart, this combination is like peanut butter and jelly and will be found next in the newest ongoing Emergents series, The Rejects. Here’s more from Wil on what inspires him to do what he does best.
InterPop: Tell me about your process coloring over Adrián Gutiérrez. How do you work together?
Wil: Firstly, I just wanted to say that Adrián’s work is FANTASTIC! It’s so amazingly full of energy, I just try my best to match that with vibrant energized color palette.
InterPop: What digital tools do you use in the coloring process?
Wil: Photoshop is my primary digital tool for coloring.
InterPop: You’ve also colored over Sean Chen for a recent The Nine variant edition. He’s considered a legend among pencilers due to his work for Marvel (and for us). What’s that experience like and how is it different from Adrián?
Wil: I wouldn’t say that coloring Sean’s art is much different from coloring Adrián’s. I just try to approach it with the same type of energy that the artist puts into their work.
InterPop: What’s the last great graphic novel you read?
Wil: I recently re-read Marvels by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross, an absolute classic.
InterPop: What’s next on the drawing board for InterPop?
Quintana: Working on something with Adrián that I think a lot of people should be excited for. I think that’s the only morsel of info I can provide at this time. [Editor: He’s referring to The Rejects, out July 6!]
InterPop: Tell us what excites you about working with InterPop!
Quintana: What’s great about InterPop is the fact that they are stories meant for digital comics. That allow me the flexibility to work with an array of colors that I normally couldn’t use for printed books.
